As school resumes for our students, the dates of the preliminary examinations are being announced. There was a sliver of hope that examinations may be pushed back slightly, allowing students to have more face-to-face practice with their teachers and tutors, especially for the oral component.
However, this not to be the case. Most students have informed me that their oral dates will be at the end of July, after their one week break. While I would love to pencil in face-to-face oral workshops that week, the confirmed date for Phase 2 has yet to be announced. So, I have had to prepare other methods of oral practice in our weekly classes.
We work on a new theme every lesson. All or half the class must answer the SBC questions asked based on a particular poster. This takes up about 20 minutes of lesson time but this ensures that students are exposed to a variety of different oral themes right up to their Preliminary oral. We also discuss together the best ways to approach each question in the SBC using the TREES approach.
As I cannot yet confirm any oral workshops or classes that the students outside of Thinking Factory can join in, I have instead created an online English Oral E-learning programme to mirror some of the themes that I have worked on with my own students. Students can watch the videos of my explanations, plan out their answers and watch the best ways to answer the questions by analyzing the model answers together, through the videos. They will also get a chance to be tested by choosing a date for a one-to-one oral testing via zoom.
In the meantime, I have compiled a list of SA1 and Preliminary SBC themes that my students from 2016-2019 were tested on. I have chosen two common themes from each year. I hope that this can help students prepare for their Prelim oral in some small way.
