P6 CA1 Vocabulary List (Part 1)

As promised, I have started on the P6 Vocabulary List taken from the CA1 2016 Top School Papers. Below are the first three schools. I will post more next week. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!


NYPS

1) temperament – the combination of mental, physical, and emotional traits of a person; natural predisposition
2) vehemence – expressing strong feelings with fervour or fury
3) to make amends – to compensate as for an injury or loss or mistake
4) advocate – to publicly support an idea or a way of doing something
5) dubious – thought to be not completely true or not to be trusted
6) staunch – always loyal in supporting a set of beliefs
7) adamant – impossible to persuade or unwilling to change a decision or idea
8) immeasurably – so large and great that it cannot be measured
9) intermittently – starting and stopping


CHIJ

1) exhilaration – excitement and happiness
2) exuberance – very energetic
3) clam up – to remain silent
4) clamp down – a sudden action taken by the government or authority to stop an activity
5) a bee in her bonnet – to keep talking about something/obsessed with an idea
6) a chip on her shoulder – an angry attitude from someone who feels that he is treated unfairly
7) a feather in her cap – an achievement to be proud of


St Hilda’s

1) toying – to consider something in not a serious way
2) speculate – to guess possible answers to a question
3) steadfast – staying the same for a long time and not changing unexpectedly
4) patriotic – showing love for your country and being proud of it
5) quell – to stop something especially by using force
6) subdue – to reduce the force of something
7) surmount – to deal successfully with a problem
8) annihilate – to destroy something completely until nothing is left
